How To Customise BMC Software Track-It Technician Web Grid

Customising the Track-It technician web grid is one of the first places to start when you want to view data in a pre-defined format on the screen. You can even export the data to excel or print it directly from the grid. Changes to the grid are made possible by configuring the paging mode within the Track-It Technician Web grid.  BMC has even made it possible to modify the number of Work Orders displayed in a group. However, be careful when increasing the number of Work Orders displayed as this has a negative impact on the page load speed.

Configure BMC Software Track-It Technician Web Paging Mode

There are two paging modes available in BMC Track-It. The first is the default mode that includes the display of the record count and the number of pages while the second, “fast” pwork orderaging mode, speeds up the web application at the expense of always displaying the record count and the number of pages.

To configure the paging mode, follow the steps outlined below.

  1. Open the following directory on the Track-It! application server (default):Track-It! 10.x and 11.x upgrades
    C:\Program Files\Numara Software\Numara Track-It!\Track-It! Services\ConfigurationDataTrack-It! 11.x new
    C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Track-It!\Track-It! Services\ConfigurationData
  2. First, make a backup copy of the Numara.TrackIt.Application.Web.xml (Track-It! 10.x) orTrackIt.Application.Web.xml (Track-It! 11) file in case a mistake is made and the file must be restored.
  3. Open the Numara.TrackIt.Application.Web.xml (Track-It! 10.x) or TrackIt.Application.Web.xml(Track-It! 11) file with Notepad.
  4. Click Edit -> Find, and search for “defaultPagingMode“.i.e. defaultPagingMode description=”normal, or fast (does not use count queries)”>normal
  5. Change the value to “fast” to increase the speed of the application, keeping in mind that fast mode may not display page or record counts.NOTE: If you change the paging mode to “fast”, make sure to also change the “WebGrid.1 pagingMode” line under the “GridViews” section to “fast”, as that line explicitly defines the “My Open Work Orders” grid as using the “normal” paging mode. If this is not done, the “My Open Work Orders” grid will still continue to use the record counts.
  6. Save the changes to the file.
  7. Restart the IIS Admin Service and World Wide Web Publishing Service on the Web server.

Configure the Number of Work Orders Displayed

Remember, as stated earlier in the article, the more Work Orders you display on a page, the slower your web page will load. Having said that, let’s look at how to configure the Work Order display counter.

  1. Open the following directory on the Track-It! application server (default):Track-It! 10.x and 11.x upgrades
    C:\Program Files\Numara Software\Numara Track-It!\Track-It! Services\ConfigurationDataTrack-It! 11.x new
    C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Track-It!\Track-It! Services\ConfigurationData
  2. First, make a backup copy of the Numara.TrackIt.Application.Web.xml (Track-It! 10.x) orTrackIt.Application.Web.xml (Track-It! 11) file in case a mistake is made and the file must be restored.
  3. Open the Numara.TrackIt.Application.Web.xml (Track-It! 10.x) or TrackIt.Application.Web.xml(Track-It! 11) file with Notepad.
  4. Click Edit -> Find, and search for “defaultPageSize”.i.e. defaultPageSize description=”The number of rows to show on a grid page”>50
  5. Increase or decrease the number as needed and then save the file.NOTE: If you change the page size to a different number, make sure to also change the “WebGrid.1” line’s “pageSize” value (under the “GridViews” section) to the new number, as that line explicitly sets the “My Open Work Orders” grid view to display 50 records per page. If this is not done, the “My Open Work Orders” grid will still continue to display 50 records per page.
  6. Restart the IIS Admin Service and World Wide Web Publishing Service on the Web server

Conclusion

Always remember to pay careful attention to the instructions when modifying the Work Order count and the page mode. Even though BMC has made this process very easy, making a mistake can cause havoc within your environment.
